Though the weather still seems to be stuck in winter, the first official day of spring has already arrived. If you follow the calendar, March 20th is the day that usually kicks everyone into spring cleaning gear. Organizing, purging, cleaning, and storing will take up most of our time for a few days. In addition to cleaning your home, March is also a great time to do a spring cleaning of your estate plan. Re-evaluating your belongings and possessions during the same time you clean and organize for the year is a perfect mix. Our estate lawyers in Raleigh NC are available to help you get your estate plan updated, as well.

Financial Accounts
Looking through monthly statements is a great way to determine whether or not your financial accounts have changed any. Keep your statements in a safe place and then review them all during your estate plan spring cleaning. Notate whether or not the statements are addressed to you, or if you are listed as a trustee. If they’re addressed to you as a trustee, it’s a good idea to make sure you have a copy of the Trust Certificate. You can then go to the financial institution and complete any paperwork that might need updates as well.
Real Estate
Just as you did for your financial accounts, you can also take a look at your county tax statements to determine if the real estate you own is through a trust or not. If the property is not owned in trust, you will need to consult an attorney to prepare a deed to move the property into trust.
