Updates for the New Year | Estate Lawyer in Raleigh

  • Children Reaching Milestones - Has your child (or children) reached the age of 18 or 21? If so, be sure to document this properly, as it could affect their inheritance should you pass.
  • Incapacitation or Death of a Beneficiary – If either of these or other important role in an estate plan, it’s time to make updates. A serious illness or death of someone named in your estate plan should be documented as soon as possible. Those that are named as executor, power of attorney, or trustee, especially, should be documented at the time of death or incapacitation. Concerning any changed matters, including those listed above, you should speak with an attorney as to how to adequately address these in your estate plan.
  • Life Changes - Have you begun or ended a relationship with someone in 2016? Have you become involved in an organization that’s important to you? It’s important to include these changes in your documents if you have or would like to include them in your estate plan.

Keeping your estate plan up-to-date with changes is important. Meeting with your estate lawyer in Raleigh quarterly, semi-annually, or at least annually might be a good idea. That way, you can ensure that all changes are updated and documented properly, in the event that you have an untimely incapacitation or death.
